Hochiminh City's IT Overview

Information Technology (IT) Industry is still a new one in Vietnam, it has an average growth of 40-50% each year. HoChiMinh City is the "Hot Place" of development and is a place where concentrating on the technology developing elements of applying, trading, research training and expanding, and so on. With IT product values traded in 1999 was about $80 million USD serving for 40% in domestic market consuming, that comprise of USD $60 million of hardware products and USD $20 million of software products.

At present, a series of world leader famous companies specializing in IT field operating in HoChiMinh City including IBM, Intel, France Telecom,Telstra, Compaq, Siemens, Fujitsu, Acer, Hewlett Packard, Oracle, Paragon Solutions, Cyrus Intersolf, etc. There are about 24 foreign capital owned companies operate in applying software development in HoChiMinh City. They provide Information Technology solutions, Multimedia services. In terms of hardware, 75% domestic PC is assemblied in HoChiMinh City.

These IT companies have expanded their markets in America and Europe, etc. And local IT companies such as FPT, Dolsoft have been marketing their IT products in Europe and North America markets.

Together with Hanoi, HoChiMinh City is in progressing of developing IT industry based on high quality human resources. Labour force working in Information Technology area is about 6,000 people in HoChiMinh City. Annually, this force was added from 2,500 - 3,000 people who were well-trained from Universities and colleges in HoChiMinh City. In addition, there are also some foreign Joint Education Training Colleges existing in HCMC such as Aptech-FPT (India), College Informatics, Lotus Informatics Training and RMIT, etc …

Software Development has been seen as an important industry in 21st century by Vietnamese Government and Local Government, and they introduced a number of priorities and incentives for developing this area such as: tax, credit, land (Decision No.128/2000/QN-TTg) (Decree No. 07/NQ-CP), (Decision No.21/2001/QD-UB):.
