INDUSTRY – BAMBOO AND RATTAN PRODUCTS
Handicrafts’ export
market information
Currently,
Vietnamese handicraft products have entered exporting markets
with turnover values as follows:
Currently,
handicraft and fine-art products ranked among the ten largest
key products in export values, in which bamboo and rattan
products accounted for nearly US$ 60 million.
Handicraft
and fine-art products gain high popularity in over 50 countries
and territories with major markets such as: Europe (EU),
America, Japan, Taiwan, Korea and the Middle-East. EU market
is considered as a potential importer for wooden products,
porcelain/pottery products, bamboo and rattan products,
lace-works. Japan, the largest market for handicraft and
fine-art products mainly made from wood, imports around
of US$ 60 million of the handicraft and fine-art products
from Vietnam annually.

A source
from the Ministry of Planning and Investment stated that earnings
from handicraft exports in the first two months of 2001 reached
USD $41 million, an increase of 1.2% over the same period last
year.
Bamboo products made in Vietnam are
exported to many countries e.g: the U.S, Germany, the U.K, France,
Russia, Holland, Portugal, Japan, Hongkong, Singapore, Korea;
of which Germany, Japan and Hongkong are main markets. Experts
said that these products are highly competitive abroad thanks
to super craftsmanship and low price.
Household appliances made of wood
exported to U.S climbed up to 20% in the year 2000 compared to
the previous year, according to the Ministry of Trade. The US
imported wooden items worth USD $4 million in 1999 including wooden
chairs, table and bamboo, rattan products. These have been highly
evaluated by American importers and consumers in both high quality
and diversified models of items, competitive with China-the largest
wooden product exporter into the US market. With the potential
of BTA implementation, quite a few US businesses have come to
Viet Nam to learn about the local market and seek investment opportunities
in this field.
It is expected that Vietnam’s
handicraft products will bring in about US$ 1 billion of export
earnings by 2005, as the items are now more sought after in the
world, and more and more countries are turning to Vietnam’s
local items.

In
Vietnam, and in Ho Chi Minh specifically, bamboo and rattan products
(hereinafter referred to as "Bamboo Products") are mainly
produced by manual method; skillfully and meticulously handled
by our traditionally – well trained craftsmen.
|
The exporters in the field have often signed
sales contracts with foreign buyers and then signed processing-contracts
with sub-contractors locally for products’ making. In some circumstances,
the exporters assign local sub-contractors to manufacture only semi-products
and take care of the finished products themselves to meet customers’
specification.

Raw material sources and
Labour forces in Bamboo and Rattan area

Palm-leaf, bamboo,
rattan, almond-leaf, coconut-leaf, water hyacinth, sea-grass,
and jute are commonly used as natural raw materials for Bamboo
products. Local raw material sources concentrate in North-East
South: Tan Uyen (Binh Duong Province); Cu Chi, Hoc Mon (Ho
Chi Minh City); North-West forests, North Central Coast (Thanh
Hoa), and Red River Delta (Ha Tay); Leaf as raw materials
in North East South (Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan), Mekong River
Delta (Tien Giang) and Red River Delta (Ninh Binh, Ha Tay).

Up to
now, the number of craftmen working in the field is estimated
at 20,862 people and 11,640 people in the North and the South,
respectively. The labour forces mainly come from Ha Nam, Quy Nhon,
Ninh Binh, Ha Tay (Phu Vinh, Phu Nghia) … For the time being,
there are mainly handicraftmen and a large volume of manual workers
may be mobilized in case of demands.

There are about 320 units specializing
in producing and exporting Bamboo Products (Please, see the list
below) with many types of items as: bags, trays, dishes, pots,
wine bottle holders, fans (rush fan, bamboo tape fan), painted
bamboo curtains, jute mats (drink-mat and doormat) and carpets,
mattings, lamp shades and furniture (tables, chairs, beds, wardrobes),
musical instruments and joss-sticks, etc,…
